Becoming Autonomous Systems
Oil on Plywood
8' x 4'
2011

Plywood has unique patterns like human fingerprints and DNA. Becoming Autonomous Systems specifically references the division of mitochondrial DNA during mitosis, the process by which DNA is transferred from mother to child and cell to cell. It is the process of exchanging data, both biologic and learned, from mother to child, which informs the growth and development of the child. I was reflecting upon the moment when the fertilized human egg cell makes the first division signifying the first moments of separation between mother and child, and the millions of divisions or tiny break-ups that will happen over the course of a human lifetime, which, in summary inform the character of each individual.
